Church Leaders

Session

The word, “Presbyterian” comes from the Greek word used in the New Testament for “elder.” Leadership in the Presbyterian church is always shared between the ministers and the lay leadership. We strongly believe that God calls both men and women into leadership. Our co-pastors act as moderators of the Session, which is composed of 15 elders elected by the people. Most decisions in the church are made by the Session, although there are some major decisions made by the congregation as a whole (for example, the calling of new pastors and the election of church leaders).

Deacons

In addition to the Session, the congregation is led by the Board of Deacons. The Deacons visit the sick and hospitalized, keep up with college students away from home and house-bound members, organize fellowship events for the congregation, and help those with special financial needs. We have 26 Deacons, two of whom are “youth deacons” also elected by the congregation.

Committees

Ministry is shared at First Presbyterian Church among all its members. Our committees are teams of church members seeking to use their gifts to further the ministry of the church. The committees include elders, deacons, and other church members interested in that area of ministry. The committees are always open to new members. Most committees meet on the first Wednesday evening of each month. If you have any questions about a committee, or would like to serve on that committee, contact the committee chair or the pastors.
